Frequently Asked pregnancy and postpartum questions

can i improve symptoms any time postpartum, even perimenopause or menopause?

Yes! It is never too late to see improvement in symptoms and function no matter how far postpartum you are. The hormonal changes during menopause leading to vaginal atrophy in combination with skin elasticity changes as we age, can contribute to things like pain from old scar tissue, decreased tissue support causing  previously asymptomatic pelvic organ prolapses to become symptomatic, or problems can arise from postpartum muscle imbalances that previously weren't addressed.

can i decrease risk of complications postpartum?

Yes! Pregnancy places huge changes and stress on our body that can lead to complications during birth and postpartum. While we can't always control or predict unforeseen circumstances, we can learn exercises and strategies to prepare our bodies during pregnancy. This can optimize our birthing experience and decrease risk of tearing, prolapse, leaking, diastasis recti, pain, and improve out postpartum recovery.

is it safe to exercise during pregnancy?

Yes! Exercising is not only safe but improves the health of both baby and mother during this time. Even during difficult pregnancies, we can learn ways to target key muscles to support our bodies as baby grows and help prepare us for birth. This looks different for everyone based on past medical history, fitness level, and risk factors so developing an individual plan based on your unique presentation is essential.

what is pelvic organ prolapse?

Pelvic organ prolapse is when your bladder, urethra, cervix, or rectum descend into the vaginal canal due to weakening and stretching of supportive tissue. Risk factors include pregnancy, vaginal birth, tearing,  poor intra-abdominal pressure management, and history of constipation. It's a common condition that can be well managed with the right care, and many women live symptom free without any functional limitations .

what is diastasis recti?

Diastasis recti is when your rectus abdominis muscles (think six pack) separate due to stretching of the linea alba (fascia connecting the two sides of the muscle) during pregnancy. This is a normal process to accommodate a growing baby, and 100% of women will have this in late pregnancy and immediately after birth. The amount of separation and then closure postpartum varies widely. Some women will have full closure while other's maintain some degree of separation. Both are functional, healthy, and yes, perfectly normal! However, more severe separations that don't resolve can create muscle imbalances, symptoms, and dysfunction that need to be addressed with rehab to improve.
